Learn the ins and outs of how to carve in soapstone with sculptor David Shankland. The tradition of carving soapstone, also named Steatite, dates back 3000 years to China and the Inuit tribes of North America. It is easy to work with and carves almost like butter with rasps and chisels and finishes to a glass like texture. You will be working with varying shaped apple green stones weighing 7-10 pounds. This is a 3 week, 3 hours per week workshop. Before carving, you will start by making a clay model based on the size and shape of your stone. Carving tools, rasps and sandpaper will be provided. There will be a $50 material fee for stone and shipping to be paid to the instructor the first day of the workshop. Workshop fee: $130
